Lab Manager/Technician

Huaqing completed his degree in Bachelor’s of Biology. He started his career at McMaster University working with Dr. Khan in 2005. Since then he has been an integral part of the Khan lab for 15+ years, and have made significant contributions to the lab over the years.

Huaqing is in charge of overseeing lab procedures, managing/creating experimental protocols, enforcing lab safety, teaching various lab techniques, and helping lab members to troubleshoot experiments. Huaqing is kind, caring, and passionate about science and those traits make him an incredible mentor for all students and employees in the lab.

Fun Fact: Huaqing loves visiting and taking care of his grandchildren!

Research Coordinator

Jensine completed her bachelor’s degree in Honours Biology from the University of Windsor with a minor in biochemistry. Subsequently, she pursued a Master's degree in Medical Sciences at McMaster, focusing her research on the effects of the gut microbiota on intestinal inflammation in the Khan Lab. Currently, Jensine remains an integral part of the Khan Lab, leading various projects and investigating interactions between gastrointestinal physiology, environmental factors and inflammatory processes.

Fun fact: Jensine enjoys baking and has mastered a number of different types of bread. As a matter of fact, she has a sourdough starter that is over 5 years old!

M.Sc. Candidate

Tyler is a M.Sc. student investigating the effects of chronic exposure of common azo dyes on gut microbiota and barrier function. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from McMaster University in Biology & Pharmacology with a minor in Biochemistry. To investigate the specific mechanisms underlying the interactions between azo dyes and the gut, Tyler utilizes various molecular techniques to examine the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota, shedding light on potential disruptions caused by these colorants.

Fun fact: Tyler likes to watch and play sports. He particularly enjoys playing hockey!

M.Sc. Candidate

Sadrina completed her bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology at Brac University. Her passion for gut health research led her to join the lab as a master’s student where she investigates the significance of autophagy in host defense in an enteric parasitic infection.

Yusra is entering her second year of undergraduate studies, pursuing a degree in Medical Sciences at Western University. Her passion for research led her to join the lab as a summer research assistant and she has been contributing to the ongoing projects at the lab. She actively aids the lab members in conducting a wide array of experiments while ensuring precise data collection.
